On December 11, we joined Whitewater Middle School’s ESTEM Magnet Open House night to share information about the Stowe project. HDR and Charlotte Water had the privilege of connecting with more than 83 middle school families during this event. The evening was part science fair and part magnet school open house. Eighth-grade students were given the chance to learn more about potential magnet and charter high schools in the Charlotte area that are focused on STEM curriculums.
Upon graduation, Whitewater Middle School students can choose to attend a magnet high school within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district via a school choice lottery system. They can select from a variety of magnet programs based on their interests such as Visual and Performing Arts, International Baccalaureate, Law, Social Justice and Forensic Pathology, World Languages and STEM.
The evening was also a great opportunity for families to explore Whitewater Middle School’s Environmental STEM (E-STEM) program. It is crafted to empower students to change the world by leveraging personal growth, social change and global action, technology and innovation and design. Guests received information about the school and its offerings, toured its Verizon Innovation Lab and snacked on light refreshments. They also enjoyed watching science experiments, demonstrations and interactive activities play out in real time.
Our team distributed wastewater coloring and activity books that explained the wastewater treatment process, Charlotte Water pens and coasters and booklets about the new Stowe Facility. We also chatted with students about what a career in municipal water could look like. We were thrilled and encouraged to see the students’ high level of engagement in learning about different career options in the water field!
