City of Mount Holly

Charlotte Water is partnering with the City of Mount Holly and the City of Belmont to implement a regional partnership for future wastewater management to serve communities in northwestern Mecklenburg County and eastern Gaston County.

This partnership will allow the City of Mount Holly to provide more cost-effective and environmentally-conscious wastewater management services to our residents and customers, while also ensuring that they have the necessary infrastructure and treatment capacity to manage future wastewater flow projections.

Charlotte Water will be providing services for our wastewater treatment needs only; the City of Mount Holly Utilities Department will continue to provide the water treatment services for the community.

Our coordination with Charlotte Water will allow us to:

  • Decrease the number of places where wastewater is discharged to the Catawba River.
  • Avoid making high-cost upgrades to the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Reduce the cost of future wastewater treatment expansions or upgrades by taking advantage of inclusion in a larger regional facility.
  • Meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations by treating Mount Holly's wastewater at the state-of-the-art Stowe Facility.
  • Repurpose the current wastewater treatment plant site for new city uses.

Message from City Manager

"The City of Mount Holly looks forward to the wastewater regionalization project and working with Charlotte Water in the future. This partnership will allow for Mount Holly's future growth, all while keeping the environment in the forefront by delivering our wastewater to a state of the art wastewater treatment plant." - Miles Braswell, City Manager

To combine Mount Holly’s wastewater treatment with Charlotte Water’s, Mount Holly's aging wastewater treatment plant was replaced with a pump station that
will pump wastewater 65-75 feet underground, below the Catawba River and Long Creek, to the Stowe Facility
for treatment. The existing wastewater treatment plant is now being decommissioned and the site restored.

Mount Holly’s wastewater now travels through a 3,043-foot long pipeline located 65-75 feet underground, deep in bedrock beneath the Catawba River and Long Creek.
There are two sets of pipes under the river and Long Creek to support high flow events and maintenance.
