In April the Stowe Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility team had the opportunity to chat and discuss a career in water with the students at Whitewater Middle School.

Our Charlotte Water team was energized and invigorated about the future of the science, technology and engineering fields after talking with inquisitive students at Whitewater Middle School’s College and Career Day fair on April 23.

We were joined by some of our wonderful partners currently building the transformational Stowe Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility (RWRRF), HDR and The Haskell Company, who helped educate students about the project’s engineering and construction needs during the event. The new wastewater treatment facility is located less than a mile away from their school, and its massive size and scope piques students’ curiosity.

We spoke with more than 200 students about what a future career in the public water sector might look like, while also touching on the basics of the wastewater treatment process. Whitewater Middle School is an E-STEM (Environmental, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) magnet school. Its programs are crafted to empower students to change the world by leveraging personal growth, social change and global action, technology and innovation, as well as design. Students happened to be focusing on water in their science classes during the month of April, so our visit was perfectly timed! The young scholars also enjoyed receiving some Charlotte Water branded gift items and activity books.

Our community and school engagements as an organization are a part of our efforts to connect with, inform and engage residents about Stowe RWRRF and its importance in purifying millions of gallons of wastewater as the region’s population continues to grow. Additionally, the preserved land around Stowe RWRRF will provide outdoor education and recreation amenities for the community, including the students at Whitewater Middle School. We have been a proud partner of the school for several years and look forward to continuing our support for years to come!
