Spring has arrived, inviting us to step outside to enjoy sunny days, blooming flowers, and the region’s expansive network of greenways and trails. We are proud to be creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation as part of the Stowe Project, including a new paved multi-use path!

This mile-long paved trail along the Stowe entrance road took a year and a half to build and is the product of a strong partnership with the Carolina Thread Trail. Whether you’re walking, biking, or just enjoying the outdoors, this trail will provide a safe, scenic route that connects neighbors to the preserved greenspace around the Stowe Facility. The multi-use path is just one piece of a larger vision for the Stowe Community Benefit Project. Charlotte Water purchased a 90-acre property for the new Stowe entrance road and Community Benefit Project, the majority of which will be preserved as greenspace for future generations.
At the end of the path, outdoor enthusiasts can take in views of Long Creek, a tributary that flows into the Catawba River. The multiuse path includes a dedicated lane on the new bridge to the Stowe Facility that is protected from vehicle traffic. This community amenity will provide access for people of all abilities to enjoy this unique natural habitat. We are so proud to share this shining example of community-informed design.

In the early stages of the project, we asked the community what features and experiences mattered most to them. Through an online visioning workshop and survey, 457 residents shared their ideas and priorities. One clear message stood out: people wanted more access to outdoor recreation while preserving the natural, tranquil landscape of the area.

That feedback, combined with insights from a Community Stakeholder Committee, helped shape a collective vision for the project. The result? A multi-component Community Benefit Project designed to enhance the community’s vibrancy, connectivity, and well-being.
